Did You Know? - U-matic was the first videotape format to fit inside a cassette, launching in 1971 — basically the grandfather of every tape that followed, from VHS to MiniDV. It was bulky, clunky, and looked like a weaponized brick, but it revolutionized TV news by letting crews shoot and edit faster than film reels ever allowed.

Betacam (introduced by Sony in 1982), it was the gold standard for professional broadcast video for over two decades. What made it special? Unlike consumer Betamax, it used component video — splitting color and brightness signals — which meant much better image quality. Networks loved it, and if you watched TV in the '80s or '90s, chances are most of what you saw was shot on Betacam.
