Did You Know? - Introduced by JVC in 1976, VHS beat out Sony’s technically superior Betamax because it offered longer recording times (up to 6 hours) and cheaper licensing, making it a hit with consumers and video rental stores.

But here’s the fun part: VHS was never meant to last. It was designed for recording TV shows, not preserving memories for decades. Yet it stuck around for over 30 years, recording everything from birthday parties to cult horror films that now go for hundreds on eBay.

VHS-C (the “C” stands for Compact) was launched in 1982, it used the same half-inch tape as full-size VHS but in a much smaller shell — perfect for portable camcorders. For a lot of families, VHS-C was the go-to for baby’s first steps, awkward school plays, and dad’s infamous dance moves — all immortalized in glorious analog fuzz.
