FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Below you'll find the most common questions we receive.

What’s an “item”?
An “item” can be 4 different things: 1 video or audio tape, 1 50' film reel, 1 set of 25 photos or slide, one roll of 35mm negatives. You can mix and match to include all of those different types in one box!

A tape that has 4 hours of content is counted the same as one that has 5 minutes.
For spliced film reels, IE. 200 ft = 4 Items

What if I have a number of items in between your box sizes?
With each box, we allow the option to add additional items.
WorksBox 2 Item Add-On - $20 per item
WorksBox 10/20/40 - $15 per item
You can add to cart from the Product Page or on the Shop Products page!

So, go ahead and round down for the box size you’re wanting and you can add those extra items.

Do you offer an editing service?
Not currently. Please email digitalworks@film.ca to speak with a technician.

How long does the service take?
Typical turnaround time is 2 weeks, but may be more depending on the size and complexity of your order. Once we have received your WorksBox and gone through your items, we will let you know your timeline in our welcome email to confirm!

Do my items automatically get returned?
Yes, items are automatically returned to you once we've completed digitization.
If you do not want your items back, please enter the discount code "NORETURN" at checkout and we will safely and securely dispose of your original items for you.

Will Digital Works enhance, improve or restore my items?
We strive to achieve the highest quality transfer for your items, but the final result depends on the condition of the originals. Please note, we do not provide restoration or editing services. Any imperfections in the original media will carry over to the digital copies.

Specifically, we do not offer services like colour correction, HD remastering, combining footage, or altering the composition of your media. Our process ensures a straightforward one-to-one transfer.

For film formats, we can apply a basic cleaning filter and perform minor static and gap trims. However, we cannot offer enhancements for tapes.

Do you convert sound on film?
Yes, we provide sound conversion for Super8 and 8mm film

Can you convert my photos/slides/negatives in chronological order?
While we strive to provide the best service possible, due to the scanning process, we can’t guarantee that your photos will be transferred in a specific or chronological order. Our top priority is preserving your memories with the highest quality.

But we've got good news! When you choose a photo disc, thumb drive, or via your cloud link, you’ll receive your photos as JPEG files. These are easy to upload to your computer, where you can rearrange and edit them to suit your preferences using any photo storage program.

What do I receive back?
Your fully digitized memories will be sent to you via a secure cloud link where they are accessible for 90 days. All of your original material will be shipped back to you (unless you used the NORETURN code) along with any additional media purchased (USB, or DVD).

How do I need to pack my photos?
Please package your photos and slides in bundles of 25 and place them in the provided ziplock bags in your WorksBox.
Note: we cannot process your photos if they arrive to us in sleeves, photo albums, carousels, or any other packaging outside of the provided plastic bag.

What if one of my items is blank, damaged, or cannot be converted?
If your items arrive damaged or dirty, we will contact you to discuss the next steps.
